Gravity Die Casting Machine Gravity Die Casting is a permanent mould casting process, where the molten metal is poured from a vessel or ladle into the mould. The mould cavity fills with no force other than gravity, filling can be controlled by tilting the die. Undercuts, and cavities can be incorporated into the component form with the use of sand cores. This process gives a better surface finish than sand casting as well as better mechanical properties, both due to rapid solidification.

Types of gravity die casting Tilting Gravity Die Casting:-These machines have a tilting mechanism that allows the mold to be tilted after pouring to facilitate easier filling of the mold cavity and removal of air bubbles. Tilting can be manual, hydraulic, or servo-controlled. There can be variations in the tilting angle (e.g., 0/90 or 0/120) depending on the machine model. Stationary Gravity Die Casting:-The mold on these machines remains stationary throughout the process. This is a simpler design, but filling complex shapes might be more challenging compared to tilting machines.

Gravity die casting is often a manual process, with the molten metal added with the use of a ladle. However, for some high volume applications it is also possible to use an automated ladle to pour the molten metal. The speed and the direction of the filling can also be controlled by tilting the die.

Gravity die casting, also known as permanent mold casting, is a metal casting process that utilizes the force of gravity to fill a reusable mold cavity with molten metal.

Holds and dispenses molten metal: The machine provides a safe and controlled environment to hold the molten metal, often in a heated reservoir. It then allows for the smooth pouring of the metal into the mold cavity using gravity. Ejects the finished casting: Once the metal solidifies, the machine uses an ejection unit to remove the finished casting from the mold efficiently.

High-Quality Castings: The slower and controlled filling process minimizes turbulence and air entrapment, resulting in castings with excellent dimensional accuracy, good surface finish, and minimal porosity (tiny holes). This translates to parts that require less machining and finishing after casting. Cost-Effective for Medium to High Volume: While the initial mold cost can be higher upfront, gravity die casting molds are reusable for thousands of castings, making it cost-effective for producing medium to high volumes of parts. The machinery involved is also simpler compared to some other casting methods. Suitable for Complex Shapes: The reusable mold allows for more intricate designs compared to simpler casting methods like sand casting. This enables the creation of parts with complex geometries and internal features.
